One couple’s return to Saint Lucia, 35 years after their honeymoon — and everything they learned about traveling the Caribbean after 55.

My husband and I just returned from an unforgettable trip to Saint Lucia, and as travelers in our late 50s, we came home with a clear realization: the way we love to travel has changed — and honestly, it’s changed for the better. If you’re thinking about Caribbean travel after 55, here’s what nobody tells you about how much smarter, and more comfortable, this stage of life travel can be.

Thirty-five years ago, we celebrated our honeymoon on this very island, young, blissful and naïve to international. It was always a destination we talked about going back. So when we were invited to a five-night getaway, we jumped at the chance, eager to see how Saint Lucia had evolved, and relieved to find it hadn’t lost an ounce of its authentic Caribbean charm.

We stayed at Secrets Saint Lucia Resort & Spa (formerly the St. James’s Club Morgan Bay), recently renovated and rebranded into a luxury, all-inclusive, adult-only resort. As a travel agent who specializes in Caribbean vacations, I couldn’t wait to experience it firsthand — and I came home with plenty to share about what makes (or breaks) a great Caribbean trip at this stage of life.

Getting There: Understanding Saint Lucia’s Island Terrain

A little real talk: When you’re planning your active adult (not quite ready for the word “senior” Caribbean travel, understanding the island’s layout ahead of time makes the whole trip smoother:

1. Airport Transfers: Saint Lucia has two airports, but Hewanorra International (UVF) is the main hub. Most all-inclusive resorts sit one to two hours away. Options include private road transfers, water ferries, or helicopter shuttles. A helicopter or ferry is faster, but a road transfer shows you the true personality of the island.
2. The Drive: Winding, narrow roads climb from 14 feet above sea level to over 2,500 feet. With one lane in each direction, tight turns, and steep elevation changes, tailgating and sudden braking are normal here. Take it in, relax, breath and embrace “island time.”
3. Boarding & Deplaning: You’ll board and deplane via outdoor stairs on the tarmac rather than a jet bridge. If you need mobility assistance, request accommodations well in advance so there are no surprises.

Once you arrive, remember that much of Saint Lucia’s dramatic beauty comes from its hillside terrain. Many adult-only resorts, including Secrets Saint Lucia, are built right into the hills, so stairs and sloped walkways are part of daily life. Golf cart shuttles quickly became our best friends – though no shuttles saves you from your own footwear choices!

What We Loved as 55+ Travelers

1. An Adult-Only Sanctuary: We adore our grandchildren, but vacation time is our time. Choosing an adult-only resort meant zero poolside meltdowns and total tranquility from morning to night.
2. Thoughtful Room Ergonomics: Sleeping well on vacation can be tricky, but our suite’s bed was exceptionally comfortable. We appreciated the spacious layout, generous storage, and a separate water closet in the bathroom — because no matter how many years you’ve been married, privacy matters!
3. Built-In Daily Fitness: Staying in the Preferred Club (Building 1200) meant walking hillside paths every day. It was a bit of a workout at first, with no elevators in the accommodation building and getting to the main features was by a combination of stairs and ramps. The staircases did feature sturdy railings and wide landings. By day five, the trek felt effortless and we knew the morning breakfast staff would have our coffee ready. 
4. Comfortable Restaurant Seating: Dining comfort is often overlooked. We loved that the resort’s restaurants offered plush, supportive seating at proper heights — no awkward, ultra-low lounge chairs where you have to negotiate with your knees to stand up.

4 Questions I Always Ask Before Booking an Over-55 Caribbean (Or Any) Trip

1. How far is the resort from the airport, and what are the transfer options? Road, ferry, or helicopter transfers each come with different comfort-to-adventure trade-offs. Know what you’re signing up for before booking.
2. How accessible is the resort – think shuttle service, elevators, ramps and general ease of getting around. Various Caribbean islands have hilly terrain. A reliable golf cart shuttle is often the difference between a lovely stroll and an unexpected workout.
3. Is this resort adult-only? If quiet mornings and peaceful pools matter to you, this is the single question that changes everything about your trip.
